Episode 6

May 29, 2008 at 7:22 pm | Posted in Episode Recap | Leave a comment

Last week’s episode left us with about a million unanswered questions, and now, through the magic of YouTube, we finally get to discover the answers…

– How will Alamela‘s elimination impact the atmosphere of the rest of the house?
– Will Caris ever be able to get a grip?
– Has Leiden finally found her groove?
– What’s up with the double-elimination that’s been hinted at in the previews?
– What will be their overseas location?
– Who will go on to be Australia’s Next Top Model?

So, today’s episode opens with the mixed reactions to Alamela‘s departure… some are sad (Caris), while others aren’t (Alyce & Demelza)… surprise, surprise.

Jodhi Mail!
The girls are greeted by some dancers on their lawn with a Jodhi mail. And they assumed that (like BNTM this week) they would also be put through some sort of dance trial by fire.

Side Note #1 – These extravagant “surprise” Jodhi mails are a bit ridiculous, but they far beat the completely idiotic scrolling board that Tyra used this season.

Side Note #2 – Why is it that models need to know how to dance? Seriously?

Side Note #3 – I also think it’s hysterical that ANTM girls get limos, but worse photo shoots; while AusNTM girls get vans, but better photo shoots. Oh, the irony.

So, the model wannabes meet a couple of dancers (sorry, I don’t know dancers or their names)… one who was one of the dancing penguins on Happy Feet.

Side Note #4: Has anyone seen that movie? I must say, I was not impressed. For those that haven’t seen it… combine West Side Story with March of the Penguins, add a half hour EPA commercial to the middle of it, and you’ve got Happy Feet.

They proceed to put on their fluffy pink tutus and leotards. Leiden hated it and had a pretty awful attitude about the whole thing, and even stopped halfway through. Wow, what a slap in the face to the instructor. Yikes.

Then, they change to hip-hop gear… because, you know, you can’t hip-hop in a tutu. And Rebecca went a little crazy with the hip movement. That girl seems to me to have serious “I want to be sexy” issues. So, they practiced some Voguing and Leiden needed her hand held throughout the whole thing because she didn’t feel like she wanted to be there (a la ANTM’s Kimberly c10). As much as Tyra’s whole “Fine, then leave” thing with Kimberly seemed a bit harsh at the time, this is the second time that Leiden‘s admitted that she doesn’t want to be there, and they just keep giving her hugs and compliments and encouragement. For some reason, I like Tyra’s approach better.

Their challenge is to choreograph a routine in pairs, which actually sounds like fun. The groups are Alexandra and Leiden; Demelza and Samantha; Jamie and Alyce; and Caris and Rebecca. I felt horribly for poor Alexandra because she was paired with “I-really-don’t-care-and-don’t-want-to-be-doing-this-anyways” Leiden. Her attitude is really wearing on me. Go home, Leiden, go home.

Jodhi Mail
Oh boy. A bunch of balls come falling down the stairs. How shocking. Meh.

Jonathan met them for the challenge and told them that they would be parading the new line of Levi’s jeans with choreography. For as sexy as Demelza comes off in photographs, it seems that in real life, she’s quite awkward around guys, probably at least in part because of her age, being only 16 years old. Jamie, on the other hand, looked fabulous, and Alyce was also highly praised for her performance. They were the two challenge winners for the day and had the opportunity to appear in a music video for Seany B (whoever that is) with two friends (they chose Rebecca and Samantha).

So the girls set out the next morning to film the video clip, and the girls that didn’t win got their faces painted green with bright red lips. Alyce and Demelza got into a bit of a tiff, but it didn’t really seem like a big deal.

Side Note #5 – I may be completely nuts here, but for some reason whenever Caris talks in the one-on-one time, she totally reminds me of Pam from the TV show “The Office.” They seem to have similar personalities. Fortunately for her, I think Pam rocks.

On another note, Leiden has a disgustingly long tongue. The four winners had to “act hot, which was easy,” according to Samantha. And Rebecca and Alyce showed their not-so-professional side by flirting with Seany B and accepting an invite into his dressing room. Um… ew.

So… back at the house, Alexandra plays a “prank” on the other girls by making horribly fattening desserts and telling the girls it’s low-fat and healthy. Now that’s just low… any way you look at it, that’s just low.

Jodhi Mail!
And now it’s time for their photo shoot of the week. Hoorah.

And they get to work with male models and it turns into a gigglefest for Alyce and Demelza. And this is why I don’t normally watch TV shows with 16-17 year old girls on them. They’re just boys… they don’t have cooties. Get over it already.

The photo shoot was meant to be fresh, simple, and innocent… while modeling Peter Alexander’s pajamas. And more giggling/shrieking ensues.

Highlights:
Leiden went first and they thought she did fairly well
Caris thrilled the designer, which is always a good sign
Alexandra (who reminds me of Rachael from BNTM4) fell into one look over and over again. Jonathan mentioned that it’s because her lips are “enhanced” — wholey moley! I’d not have expected that from her
Alyce had major issues trying to relax, and they later commented on her weight (is Alexandra‘s evil ploy working?)
Rebecca also did not do well… she could not get herself together and the designer said she needed to lose some weight (again, Alexandra‘s plan is working?)… and he walked off set. Oooooh… looks bad for Rebecca
Samantha was the one girl chosen to pose topless, and she handled it professionally, which impressed the designer.
Jamie had a tough pose, and they seemed to hold her up to a higher standard because she is a dancer
Demelza was complimented on her naturally gorgeous looks, as well as for doing well on a photo shoot with two male models.

Judging panel highlights:
– The girls got to show off their dance routines… hilarious. The way they filmed it totally confused me because they spliced clips of each group’s routine in with the other routines, so it was a bit hard to tell who was really doing well.
– Poor Rebecca has been gaining inches around her hips. No more cookies for you!
– Poor Alyce also was criticized for putting on a little weight. No more cupcakes for you!

Jodhi announces that they’ll be going to a tropical destination and that two girls would be eliminated.
Call-out order:
1. Caris (whoo hoo! a well-deserved win!)
2. Demelza
3. Samantha
4. Alexandra
5. Rebecca (huh? seriously? why is that girl still here?)
6. Alyce
7. Leiden & Jamie – eliminated

As glad as I was to see Leiden finally go, I was really disappointed that Jamie left, too, especially considering how much I thought she’s improved over the past few weeks. Leiden obviously didn’t want to be there, and her attitude totally bugged me… but Jamie was probably one of the sweetest girls in the house, so I’m a bit sad that she went.

Next week… beaches, bikinis, and another tough elimination. Who will it be next?

Wednesday Morning Update:

I had a bunch of “IRL” stuff going on this week, so I haven’t been able to update this site in awhile.  But, I’m back for now… and here’s some pics from Episode 6 for you.

Photos (in order of my favorite to least favorite)

Caris – This is probably one of the best photos yet this season.  The look very “connected” (as opposed to her looking like she’s using him as an armchair) and her face is very beautiful and soft, yet intense at the same time.  She looks like a real model here.

Jamie – I know not everyone loves Jamie, but it seems to me throughout the weeks she’s improving.  Sure, her face could be more expressive, but here she gives off the impression of being completely comfortable and relaxed, despite the fact that you know holding herself up like that has to be quite a workout for her legs.  To me, it looks like a real ad.

Alexandra – I thought this one was the most interesting pose, but not particularly flattering as far as showing off the clothing.  And her arm sticking out looks funny; she’d have been better off wrapping her arm around his chest/shoulder.

Alyce – The leg-cross thing looks a bit awkward, and her facial expression isn’t doing anything for me, but overall I guess it’s not so bad.

Samantha – It’d be a fine picture if she had a neck.  And a shirt.

Demelza – I have major issues with this photo.  Not only is this pose not flattering to her body or the clothing, but the positioning make it look like she’s getting ready to give birth.  And her face in this one is boring and her eyes rather dead.

Leiden – Of all the girls, Leiden looks the most awkward/uncomfortable, which is a real turn-off for an ad like this.  The way she’s holding herself is as if she’s totally grossed out by even touching the guy and wants to have the absolute least amount of contact with him as possible.  Her face is pleasant and pretty, but the body language just screams discomfort.

Rebecca – Ew.  This is one that makes me uncomfortable even looking at it.  I think there’s a strange sort of paradox with the super-sexual body positioning and his expression contrasted with her girly middle-school half-smile/uncertain facial expression.  The body says “mature sexuality” while the face screams “little girl who has no idea what she’s doing.”  Totally creepy.

Episode 5 Recap

May 22, 2008 at 3:22 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 Comments

This week’s episode started out with a PSA from Jodhi about the “bullying” that went on in the previous week. Are people seriously getting that up in arms about it? Maybe I missed something here, but it seems to me there has been a lot worse behavior on ANTM and no one’s ever said “boo” about it. I guess Aussies are just more socially sensitive? Which leads us to wonder: Is this outrage just? Was the situation really as we saw it? — as we know, editing isn’t always all it seems. How much of it was because of Alamela’s own attitude towards the other girls, which — as we saw — was also not always kind? How much of it was just bored kids doing stupid things because they’re bored, and how much was actually intended as a personal attack? And shouldn’t we be concerned about the far worse bullying going on in our own schools among 16-year-olds? Because I’ll tell you one thing, that was nothing compared with some of the bullying that I’ve seen.

Just another note: I hate their theme music. I find it incredibly obnoxious in an 80s hip-hop sort of way. Anyone else feel this way? I know there have GOT to be others that press the “mute” during the opening, right?

Rebecca talks about what a bad week she had. Sorry, sweetie, but you brought it on yourself. First by being an instigator of the fighting, and secondly by not bringing it at the photo shoot. I realize we’re supposed to feel bad for the almost-eliminated girls, but I guess I’m just a bit cold-hearted.

Demelza
thinks the whole fight got blown out of proportion and feels targeted as the ringleader. But, to her credit, she does go and apologize to Alamela, which I think shows she’s a lot bigger person.

JODHI MAIL!
So the model wannabes get to learn about how to sell brands. Hey, at least they’re learning something useful, instead of how to fight in gladiator-warrior style.

They were supposed to write down words to describe themselves and Alamela spelled “intelligent” wrong. Hilarious. Then they were supposed to write which brands they wanted to model, which I thought was actually kind of a neat activity. Tyra, take notes! Then they had to “embody” that brand. Alamela chose Chanel (and rocked it); Leiden chose Vivien Westwood (and rocked it); Alyce chose John Galliano (and had no idea what she was doing); Caris chose Alexander McQueen (and froze up and panicked); Demelza chose Gucci (and didn’t really “get” it); and we didn’t really get to see what everyone else did, which was kind of a bummer.

Charlotte Dawson pointed out the winner’s Ford Fiesta — Oooooh… ahhhhhh… Ford Fiesta[/sarcastic]. I guess when you’re having a competition for girls who are 16-21 years old, though, they have lower expectations when it comes to vehicles.

Their photo shoot was to sell the car in groups of three, with costumes based on their brands from the previous day. We also learn that Jamie‘s brand was Victoria’s Secret.

Photo Shoot Highlights:
– There’s a funny segment about Samantha complaining and complaining and complaining and everyone else complaining about Samantha complaining.
Group 1: Alamela, Jamie & Alyce struggled quite a bit — they kept covering up the “FIESTA” plate; they had no idea how to pose together; and Alamela kept trying to be sexy without having any idea how.
Group 2: Leiden, Alexandra, and Demelza didn’t do so great either — Leiden rocked her look (perhaps I underestimated her?), but Alexandra and Demelza were just plain boring.
Group 3: Rebecca, Samantha & Caris were really lame — they kept giving the same poses and had no idea what to do; and Charlotte wanted to run them over. O-kay then.
Leiden won it for her group, and they get a huge prize package where they get wined and dined like real models

Jodhi meets the models back at home and gives them care packages from home. And Sam gets super-upset because she didn’t get anything from her friends or boyfriend. (Looks like it’s time to dump that slacker boyfriend of yours, huh, Sam? Note to Sam‘s boyfriend: DON’T BE A MORON; SEND THE GIRL A LETTER!)

Leiden, Demelza, and Alex flew to Brisbane, participated in a 50s-inspired fashion show, and went out to dinner. Meanwhile, back at the ranch… I mean… house… the other girls are bored out of their minds.

JODHI MAIL
This Jodhi mail showed up on the computer… (oooooh aaaaaah[/sarcasm]) which Alamela thought was “new and exciting!” She obviously doesn’t get out much.

So, the model wannabes go to the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) for a commercial shoot, which would be the basis on which they would be judged at panel. And their prop was a beaver. And, like Rebecca, I had no idea how it related to their product (Kotex)… however, if the other girls’ assessment of the term is really why they that particular mascot was chosen (which seems to be the case), then… ew, that’s horribly tacky. (Still no idea what I’m talking about? Check out the term “beaver” over at www.urbandictionary.com.)

Highlights of the commercial shoot:
– The whole concept of the commercial was a little much for me. I mean, I’m pretty open about talking about menstruation and feminine hygiene products, but throw in the beaver, the whole “look sexy for the cute boy walking by” thing, and the “down there” insinuation, and it just comes off as creepy/weird/anti-feminist
Samantha did phenomenally
Leiden seemed quite uncomfortable and awkward
Alyce had trouble picking up the package of tampons (of all things)
Jamie did great and had fun
Alamela made me laugh so hard… if I wasn’t listening to the actual words, I’d swear she was selling insulin testers to old ladies in one of those commercials they play during “The Price is Right.” Totally unbelievable.
Alexandra needed thirteen takes and decided she’d be good for commercials where she didn’t have to say too much. Yeah… she’s probably right.
Caris did extremely well
Rebecca had some major attitude
Demelza was told to kiss the male model (as a joke) to show that she can have a sexy side. So she was embarrassed and had a hard time with it, ended up coming across as rather icy.

JODHI MAIL
So, it’s time for judging panel again.

Highlights:
Alamela is told that she needs to learn how not to be so serious. True that, true that.
Demelza, Alyce, and Rebecca are criticized for seemingly skating by on their looks and not putting forth any effort
Caris is applauded for continuing to stick with her training

Call-out order:
1. Jamie – Woo hoo! Good for her!
2. Samantha
3. Caris
4. Alexandra
5. Leiden
6. Demelza
7. Rebecca
8. Alyce
9. Alamela – eliminated

Was Alamela‘s elimination fair? Assuming that AusNTM is looking for an all-around overall girl-who-can-do-everything like ANTM, then, yes, I think it’s fair. Alamela will do well in her niche of the industry, but isn’t the jack-of-all-trades that they obviously want her to be. Good luck to her, and here’s looking forward to all of the excitement, sabotage, shockers, and tears in next week’s episode!

An Introduction to the Girls of AusNTM4

May 20, 2008 at 8:10 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

For those of you just tuning in as we move on from ANTM’s finale last week, Australia’s Next Top Model has now been narrowed down to nine remaining girls.

Alamela – The mature, somewhat serious social outcast of the house, of whom the judges are quite fond.  As a very petite, yet strong redhead, she has a unique look that they seem to really like.

Alexandra – The cool, calm, collected girl with the big bangs and strong face who has thus far done very well for herself in the competition.

Alyce – The girl whose confidence often comes off as arrogance and whose enthusiasm is seen as borderline cutthroat.  Her photos and strong walk have served her well, but the judges don’t seem to appreciate her attitude.

Caris – The somewhat emotional girl whose body is not nearly as tone as the judges would like, but who continues to take photos that land her in the top of the call-out order.

Demelza – The fiesty girl who was seen as the “ringleader” in an attack against Alamela last week.  Her photos have been beautiful, but as the youngest girl in the group (at age 16), she often comes off as being quite immature.

Jamie – The second-guessing blonde who seems to struggle the most with her photo shoots.  Though a natural beauty, she hasn’t been able to pull off any really fabulous photos.

Leiden – The “alternative” girl this cycle, who has absolutely no modeling background whatsoever.  She has struggled with her photo shoots and has struggled to deal with the pressures of the house, and is at this point the definite underdog in this competition.

Rebecca – The natural beauty whom the judges think is just getting by on her looks and isn’t quite catching on to the modeling aspect of the competition.  She’s also one of the girls that was involved in the attack on Alamela last week.

Samantha – The somewhat exotic-looking, quiet girl who has been improving the most up until this point.  Her early struggles seemed to be due to a lack of self-confidence, but as she received the first call-out last week, things are definitely looking up for her.

And so we wait for our next episode, wondering:  Will the girls really back off and let Alamela be?  Will Leiden be able to handle another week in the house?  Will Jamie figure out what she needs to do to get a good picture?  And who will be eliminated next?
